About the Course

Who It’s For:

Beginners or career switchers looking to explore design.

Programme Aim:

  • Provide a solid grounding in design fundamentals and principles
  • Empower students with a range of technical skills to be able to give form to design ideas
  • Enable students to articulate ideas and information and present them clearly and confidently

    Module Title Description
    Design Fundamentals Explore core principles of design, including layout, composition, colour theory, and visual hierarchy. Learn to apply these foundations across media through hands-on exercises and creative experimentation.
    Digital Imaging and Photography This module introduces the fundamentals of digital imaging and photography, focusing on technical skills, composition, lighting, and post-production for both commercial and artistic applications.
    Adobe Basics: Photoshop Gain essential image editing and manipulation skills using Adobe Photoshop. Learn to retouch, composite, and enhance visuals for use in print and digital communication.
    Adobe Basics: Illustrator Master basic tools in Adobe Illustrator to create vector graphics, logos, icons, and illustrations. Focus on precision, scalability, and clean design for print and screen.
    Adobe Basics: InDesign Learn layout design using Adobe InDesign. Create multi-page documents such as brochures and magazines while applying grids, typography, and image placement techniques.
    Typography I Study letterforms, type anatomy, and basic typesetting. Develop an eye for selecting and combining typefaces to communicate tone, readability, and hierarchy in design.
    Typography II Build on foundational skills with advanced typographic systems, including grid-based layouts and expressive typography. Apply type creatively across editorial and experimental design projects.
    Idea Illustration Learn to sketch, visualise, and communicate concepts through drawing. Translate abstract ideas into clear visual forms that support ideation and creative storytelling.
    Motion Design Discover the fundamentals of animation and kinetic typography. Use industry tools to bring static visuals to life and explore time-based storytelling through motion graphics.
    History of Design Examine key design movements, influential designers, and the evolution of visual communication from the 20th century to today. Learn to contextualise design work historically and culturally.
    Conceptualisation Develop creative thinking strategies and ideation techniques. Learn how to generate, refine, and communicate compelling concepts that respond to design briefs and audience needs.
    Academic English Develop reading, writing, speaking, and presentation skills essential for higher education. Strengthen academic vocabulary and communication in a creative learning context.

    From there, you may progress to the BA (Hons) in Graphic Design with the University of Derby (UK) — offered in Singapore through Asian Screen Institute

    Entry Requirements

    Applicants must meet the following entry requirements to enrol:

    - Minimum Age: 16 years old

    - Academic Qualifications:
    • Completed GCE ‘O’ Level with minimum 3 grades of C6 or equivalent
    • At least 10 years of formal education AND must undergo a competency assessment
    • Mature candidates (≥ 30 years old with 8 years of relevant work experience)

    - English Language Proficiency:
    • GCE ‘O’ level English (with minimum grade of D7); OR
    • IELTS score of 5.5 (with no single band less than 5.0); OR
    • Completion of Asian Screen Institute's Certificate in Academic English; OR
    • An equivalent English language qualification
